Hutan for World Health Looking for Community Engagement Specialist at Ypsilanti, MI Full Time

Hutan develops adventure-based learning and literacy programs for children 2-7 years of age that address sedentary behavior, educational disparities, and developmental delays in early childhood. To accomplish this, we engage with schools, businesses, like organizations and individuals to promote children’s overall wellbeing in Washtenaw County, across the state of Michigan, and around the world.

GOALS AND PURPOSE: Engaging schools with the website and program

The Community Engagement Specialist will coordinate outreach to the general public, with a focus on preschools, primary education, all levels of school personnel, and parents of children 2-7 years of age in Ypsilanti and surrounding areas to raise awareness about our adventure-based learning program Bob-a-loo. Other projects will include marketing and outreach for district activities and working with partner organizations to coordinate events and increase funding.

YOUR ROLE and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hutan is looking for a Community Engagement Specialist in Ypsilanti, MI, and surrounding areas to join our group and play a vital role in bringing Bob-a-loo, our innovative adventure-based learning program to schools and parents across the state. The successful candidate will exhibit confidence and empathy, establish trust with the community, and skillfully switch between group and one-on-one interactions. They will utilize any means necessary to connect and engage with the community, including in-person group events, one-one school visits, and telephone or virtual outreach. Responsibilities:

• Actively inform educators, school administrators, like-minded organizations, parents, and community leaders about the Bob-a-loo program, using Hutan’s developed curriculum to build trust, promote health, and encourage movement

• Plan, advertise, and host virtual and in-person events for the community, fostering relationships with and between schools and parents to help encourage wellness outcomes for children 2-7 years of age

• Consistently reach out to parents and educators alike, to check in on them and encourage participation in the Bob-a-loo website, and other small and large group activities, ensuring the community engages with us every month

• Record and track details of your interactions on a computer or tablet and present them to the Hutan Executive Director each month

• Identify community members who are natural leaders and invite them to serve as Hutan Ambassadors who will help you connect with others and run events

• Connect with teachers and school administrators encouraging them to subscribe and follow our Bob-a-loo program

• Create partnerships with local community-based organizations to bring additional services to the community’s attention

• Hold yourself accountable for achieving community engagement and growth goals and monitor the success of your efforts by tracking feedback, and other metrics

Requirements:

• You have a passion for helping people and serving others.

• You understand the socio-economic and public health challenges facing disenfranchised people

• You have 3+ years of relevant community outreach, teaching, facilitation, or volunteer experience

• You have a high school diploma or GED; a associate or bachelor’s degree preferred

• You have excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal, and are comfortable speaking one-on-one and to larger groups

• You have an outgoing personality and unwavering, positive attitude, with the ability to comfortably engage with others in person and via video conference or phone

• You love building relationships and networking and have a knack for motivating and influencing different types of people

• You are great at organizing, prioritizing, and following through on commitments. You thrive when everything is in the right place, and you’ve checked all the tasks off your list

• Represent Hutan in Ypsilanti, by conducting outreach, attending meetings, and preparing and delivering school/community trainings and presentations

• You have strong computer skills and the ability to navigate web-based and app-based systems

• You can work independently in a remote work environment with little oversight

• You have reliable transportation and are comfortable traveling 20-40 miles

• You are committed to a drug-free workplace and ready for pre-employment substance abuse testing and background checks
