Salary: Up to $100,000 annually, depending on experience

Remote work details:

There are quarterly, in-person, leadership meetings at the Science is Elementary office in Mountain View, CA and the candidate should plan on spending 3-5 days in the area each quarter. Science is Elementary will pay for reasonable travel expenses.

Position Summary:

The Development Director is a key part of the Science is Elementary team. SiE is on a growth trajectory and this role will be crucial in accomplishing this growth.

The ideal candidate is creative in fundraising and donor engagement strategies. They have a track record of growing revenues to meet budgetary needs for a growing organization. The Director will be a people-person who enjoys building and sustaining relationships with diverse stakeholders. They should be passionate about making hands-on science as accessible as possible to as many children as possible and ensuring equity in science education.

The Director of Development and Donor Relations will be responsible for development strategy, and for executing all development and donor relations efforts. This position reports directly to the CEO.

Job Responsibilities:

Donor Relations and Stewardship

• Research and identify new donors who care about our mission and have capacity to give:

• individuals, family foundations, and corporate foundations.
• Cultivate and solicit donors.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with prospective and current donors, including being in
• charge of acknowledgements and reports.
• Create and implement stewardship practices to solicit larger donations.

• Represent Science is Elementary at events, as needed.
• Maintain donor records that are accurate and complete.

Storytelling

• Be creative and innovative in conveying Science is Elementary’s mission, vision, and results.
• Work with the CEO and Director of Marketing and Communications to develop appealing

• collateral and donor communications.
• Work with the leadership team to plan events and campaigns to attract new donations.

Grants management

• Create and maintain a grant pipeline.
• Identify new grant prospects, including government funding.

• Write grant proposals, together with CEO, and respond to RFPs for grants and contracts.
• Keep track of milestones, reports, and due dates
• Assist in developing reports.

Fundraising strategy and administration

• Develop an annual fundraising plan, together with the CEO, and with support of the Board of

• Directors.
• Produce a fundraising annual report.
• Support the CEO and Board of Directors, including preparing presentations, scheduling development committee meetings, and organizing development materials.

Required Qualifications:

The Director of Development and Donor Relations should be a self-starter, collaborative, and detail-oriented. They should be committed to the mission of SiE.

• 5+ years’ work experience in development, fund raising, or similar fields.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• Exceptional and effective communication skills, both written and oral.
• Strong interpersonal skills; inspires trust and camaraderie; comfortable with a variety of people and settings.

• Strong goal orientation, exceptional time management skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
• Demonstrated experience raising funds and building relationships with stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently.
• Occasional evenings and/or weekends.
• Ability to evaluate needs and develop processes to fill them.

• Willing to be hands-on as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with government funding a plus.
• Experience working on development at the foundation level

• Experience working with non-profits
